The Lake Kaniere Community Association (LKCA) is leading a community-wide trapping programme to protect our birds from introduced predator species. The aims and principles of the programme are explained in the Overview page.

LKCA members have funded, built and put in place over 120 traps in the public Kahikatea Walk and Hans Bay Islands, and many residential backyards. The traps are cleared and re-lured by community volunteers on a monthly schedule.

The LKCA is now raising funds to expand the trapping and monitoring across more of the public access areas including more of the Kahikatea Walk, Canoe Cove, the Water Race and other parts of the scenic reserve around Hans Bay, the Landing and Sunny Bight. We're excited to be supporting the increased involvement of young people, particularly in monitoring and statistical reporting activities, from the Westland area.

Trapping
Trap clearing schedule
The clearing and re-luring of traps is now devolved to small groups of people responsible for traps in the following areas:

Mid Stuart St and Punga Grove

Upper Andrews Terrace and the Hans Islands

Hans Bay waterfront

The Landing
-
Sunny Bight and Kahikatea Walk

New / emerging areas, such as Canoe Cove

Each group has a primary contact responsible for ensuring traps are checked regularly (approximately once every four weeks), however there is not a fixed schedule.

The groups, supported by a trapping coordinator, track their traps and activities on Trap.NZ and have access to tools and bait supplies stored in the Hans Bay and Sunny Bight civil defence shipping containers.
